There are many reasons to replace the engine of your Series Land Rover and there are many engines to choose from! Some are good and some not so good. I have a 1976 Series pick-up that had a standard 2.25 petrol engine. It has fantastic 4x4 capabilities but on the road it is as slow as a donkey. To get an engine to give you a good cruising speed and have good 4x4 ability, you need a TDI or a powerful petrol engine!
Let’s look at some good and bad reasons! Bad reasons
- More power. Choosing the wrong engine (V6, V8, or 6-in line) will break the gearbox and diffs.
- Fuel economy. If you fit a 300TDI you will never break even. The conversion cost versus fuel saving doesn’t make this a viable option. 300TDIs are expensive!
Good reasons
- Better cruising speed.
- More power, without damaging the drive train!
- Cheaper and more available spares.
- Diesel. No wet plugs or distributor!
- Fuel economy!
Things to take into consideration before doing a conversion:
- Air filter and hose. It is best to replace the Landy filter with a Donaldson! It has better airflow and filtration! You can then also fit a snorkel.
- Radiator and hoses. Landy radiator will not do the job for some engines! You will have to fit a bigger one with an electric fan controlled by a thermo switch! This will give the engine better temperature control!
- Intercooler. For a turbo diesel! It in not necessary to fit an intercooler, but it will give you more power and better fuel economy!
- Engine Mountings. For some of the conversions, engine mountings will have to be manufactured to specification.
- Exhaust. Will have to be custom made according to the conversion that has been done on the Landy.
